How do we deal with climate change? What do different countries propose to grow their economies?

Such issues are up for discussion during the 2017 Imperial Springs International Forum held at the Imperial Springs International Convention Center in Guangzhou's Conghua District. Attending were former world political leaders from over 20 countries and renowned scholars. The event was co-organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and the Australia China Friendship and Exchange Association (ACFEA).

This year, former world leaders discussed the world's most concerning issues under the theme of "Global Governance and China's Perspective." The China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative and building a community with a shared vision for the future of mankind received a warm response from attendees.

Six seminars to interpret the goals for the current global governance system

This year's attendees included former world leaders, including former secretary general of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, who came from over 20 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Italy, and Greece, among others, and renowned scholars from China and abroad. Six themed seminars were organized for the 2‑day forum to discuss such topics as insights on new changes in the international situation, the origin and current situation of global governance, the path and goal of global governance reform, and China's perspective on global governance, among others.

"China embraces a rapid rise; the world sees rapid changes," said Vaira Vike-Freiberga, President of the World Leadership Alliance and former President of Latvia, describing her understanding of a world entering a new era. She said that during the tremendous change, all countries need to learn from China's perspective and work together to push for global governance system reform in an innovative way.

Ban Ki-moon praised the fact that "Chinese leaders initiated the concept of building a community with a shared vision for the future of mankind and incorporated it into the report of the 19th CPC National Congress." Ban said that all countries in the world are interconnected and that international leadership is essential in helping to improve the global governance system.

Working together to realize worldwide sustainable development in the future

Luis Alberto Porto Rizzo, senior advisor for Strategy and Organizational Development of the Organization of American States, said in his speech that "We do not lack models and rules in global governance, but we do not have an effective way to implement them." He said a powerful third party was needed in trade relations to accelerate international cooperation through progressive reform steps.

Huo Jianguo, Vice-Chairman of the China Society for World Trade Organization Studies, said that escalating geopolitical conflicts, fierce global economic competition, and the declining authority of multilateral governing institutions all result in new challenges for global governance. "China's active participation in global governance reflects its responsibility as a major power," said Huo.

During the closing ceremony, Dr. Chau Chak Wing, President of the Australia China Friendship and Exchange Association and Founder, Chairman of the Kingold Group, and an organizer of the Imperial Springs International Forum, delivered a speech and hailed the opinions and suggestions of the attending delegates concerning "Global Governance and China's Perspective."

Chau said the Imperial Springs International Forum focuses on important topics in international peace, common prosperity, economic development, and cultural exchange, and invites international guests to attend discussions and push forward global collaboration. "In the future, Imperial Springs International Forum will continue making its own contributions to facilitate China's participation in global governance system reform in order to realize worldwide sustainable development," said Chau.
