The 2017 Imperial Springs International Forum, co-hosted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and the Australia China Friendship and Exchange Association (ACFEA), was held at the Imperial Springs International Convention Center on November 28th, with over 20 former political VIPs participating. Its theme was "Global Governance and China's Perspectives."
Former Prime Minister of Greece George Papandreou gave a speech summarizing the key issues that had been discussed at the two-day meeting.
First, there were opportunities and challenges created by changes in the balance of power, including taxation, corruption, population, unilateralism, and terrorism, and China was destined to shoulder the responsibility of being a leader in guiding the direction forward.
Second, strategic issues were discussed, and Mr. Papandreou explained the similarity between China's community with a shared vision for the future of mankind and Greece's ecology and homeland. He said that ecology in Greek referred to homeland; in other words, mankind shared the same ecological system and a common homeland and this was our essential strategy. He mentioned the plot of science fiction films where mankind united to fight alien invaders, saying that we should do the same in combating climate change and other sustainable development issues.
Third, the meeting discussed the US's foreign policies. Mr. Papandreou said that the US failed to understand the relationship between its own interests and other nations' interests. China, on the other hand, made it clear that China's national interest was closely connected with the interests of neighboring countries, and even the entire international community. The Chinese Dream serves the best interests of the various countries of the world. For example, the Belt and Road Initiative not only safeguards China’s national interests, but also looks after other nations' interests. Mr. Papandreou also noted that China seemed best at arriving at a sensible compromise deal whenever there was a conflict. There is nationalism all over the world and nationalism exists in China, but nationalism can reflect people's pride to their nation and can promote the further progress of the country.
Fourth, Mr. Papandreou said he believed the world was inclusive, that it had both regional governance and global governance. In the process of global governance and global leadership, people should always be placed at the center. Inclusiveness and accessibility were equally important. Common development is not to evenly distribute global wealth; instead, each country should shoulder its own responsibility, so that every nation can contribute to the challenge of globalization. Only by doing so can all citizens actively participate and we can solve these challenges together.
Finally, Mr. Papandreou said the history of ancient Greece should serve as a reference for today's world. In ancient Greece, a country that chose to stand alone was a foolish country. Power must be restricted and abuse of power must be punished. In today’s world, we have access to great power, including our technologies and military forces, but the problem is how to use these powers to bring about real benefits and not disasters to mankind.
When asked his opinion on climate change and healthy agricultural development, Mr. Papandreou suggested that the 17-point sustainable development goals of the Paris Conference on climate change should add an 18th – using common technologies for the common good of humankind. Global development should be clean, green, and inclusive, he said, and China had done a great job in this regard and China’s development blueprint had made clear these key points.
