Former World Leaders in Guangdong: Belt and Road brings revolutionary change

What is the biggest change for the Belt and Road Initiative three years after it was first proposed? One of the answers is that it has become more international.

On May 29th, during the Imperial Springs International Forum, co-hosted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and the Australia China Friendship and Exchange Association (ACFEA), Politburo Member and Party Secretary of Guangdong Hu Chunhua, Vice Chairman of Standing Committee of the NPC Zhang Baowen, and former world leaders, including former prime minister of Australia John Howard, shared their insights on the Belt and Road Initiative. They all referred to the connection between the Initiative and global governing issues, including the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Hu Chunhua said that Guangdong province, the host of the forum, is a strategic hub, a trade and economic cooperation center, and an important engine in the Belt and Road Initiative. In 2015, Guangdong's foreign trade turnover with 14 countries along the Maritime Silk Road grew by 5.7%. This was a hard-won dividend of the Belt and Road Initiative, with the many challenges of foreign trade at the time. Zhang Baowen said in his speech that every country is welcome to take part in Belt and Road construction and get on the fast development track together with China.

Vaira Vike-Freiberga recalled her experience when she visited China as President of Latvia. She praised the Belt and Road Initiative for being so widely inclusive –"China is willing to cooperate with all countries, big or small." A journalist with the Global Times asked her about the refugee crisis in Europe, based on her own experience in seeking overseas asylum for many years. She said she believed the Belt and Road Initiative and the "16+1" mechanism, a platform created by China and 16 CEE countries, would increase economic development and provide more employment opportunities in Europe, especially East Europe, which would help maintain political and social stability.

John Howard, former Prime Minister of Australia, said that world development over the past few decades owes much to globalization. However, the globalization process is now under threat from populism and trade protectionism, and that the Belt and Road Initiative regarding the development of multiple countries appeared at just the right time. Jenny Shipley, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, said the Belt and Road Initiative brings revolutionary change to international society; any economy in the world, big or small, can break the barricade and realize all-round cooperation with each other.

Speaking about the development opportunities that the Belt and Road Initiative brings to Africa, Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, said that all African countries and cities, including Nigeria, would see tangible benefits under the framework – this is part of the commitment to build a shared community.

Esko Aho, former Prime Minister of Finland, gave a speech based on the success of Nokia in his hometown. He emphasized that building an "Information Silk Road" is equally important to realize the connectivity of transportation and infrastructure networks. Aho believed that anything can be accomplished if you just think big. Some people once doubted that country-wide internet coverage of China and India, with the largest populations in the world, would result in copper shortages because its extensive use in making cables. In the end, this argument proved to be a joke.
