The high-level Imperial Springs International Forum was held at the Imperial Springs International Convention Center in Guangzhou today. Mr. Hu Chunhua, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Committee, were at the opening ceremony. Five former heads of state or government from Australia, Mexico, Greece, Italy, and Sweden attended the forum, delivering keynote speeches and conducting meetings and exchanges with Chinese entrepreneurs. About 100 international dignitaries, scholars, business leaders, and media representatives were present.
The Imperial Springs International Forum was jointly organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and the Australia China Friendship and Exchange Association (ACFEA). With its theme of "Belt and Road Initiative – New Opportunities and New Cooperation," the forum explored new pathways for security and cooperation in Asia-Pacific, as well as peace and development in the world. Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia; Madam Li Xiaolin, President of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC); and Dr. Chau Chak Wing, President of the Australia China Friendship and Exchange Association (ACFEA), addressed the opening ceremony of the forum.
In his opening address, Hu Chunhua, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Committee, remarked, "Since the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed, more and more countries and international friends have shown their understanding and recognition of it and have responded to the initiative with enthusiasm. As an important starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road in China, Guangdong welcomes the new opportunities offered by the development of the Belt and Road Initiative. We stand ready to enhance our economic and trade cooperation, as well as people-to-people ties, with countries along the Maritime Silk Road, and build Guangdong into an important engine, strategic hub, and economic and trade center on the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road."
Mr. Hu emphasized that Guangdong's economy was already deeply integrated into the world economy. Opening-up would continue to be Guangdong's greatest advantage and Guangdong would open wider to the outside world, attracting more foreign investment and speeding up its process of going global. Efforts would be made to develop the China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone to a high standard. He said that this forum was an important platform for further exchanges and cooperation, and he sincerely hoped that Guangdong would further its economic and trade cooperation with the rest of the world in its process of wider opening-up and development within the Belt and Road Initiative. Mr. Hu said that Guangdong welcomed more foreign enterprises to invest and develop their businesses for mutual benefit.
In her speech at the opening ceremony, Madam Li Xiaolin, President of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), said that thanks to the joint efforts of all parties the vision and action plan for the Belt and Road Initiative had already been made public. Preparatory work for the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank was progressing smoothly, the Silk Road Fund was successfully set up, and a number of infrastructure connectivity projects were already in progress. These early projects demonstrated to us the grand prospects for the Belt and Road Initiative. She said that China's development was achieved with the participation and support of the international community. As China develops, world development would benefit and she hoped the successful outcomes of this forum would serve as an invaluable reference for the development of China and the whole world.
Dr. Chau Chak Wing, President of the Australia China Friendship and Exchange Association (ACFEA), said in his speech that the Belt and Road Initiative has a bright future that we all aspire to. While there were common pursuits and interests in the present-day world, there were also many differences and disputes. In order to manage disputes and avoid misunderstandings and misjudgments, we needed to enhance mutual understanding. It was therefore necessary to conduct a variety of government and non-government, formal and informal high-level dialogues which would serve to further promote policy coordination, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and greater facilities connectivity. Today's Imperial Springs was an ideal place for these high-level dialogues and exchanges.
Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia addressed the audience at the opening ceremony in impeccable Mandarin Chinese. He said that he came to China more than 30 years ago and visited Guangzhou and Shenzhen. China had experienced dramatic changes in the past three decades, and today's China impressed the world with its national strength and made a huge contribution to world peace and development. He felt optimistic about China's future development because China was undergoing economic restructuring as well as transforming its development mode. China had the strength to continue developing in spite of the downward pressure of the world economy, and many Chinese businesses were dynamic and successful. The core aim of this Imperial Springs International Forum was to conduct dialogues on driving the economic development of our region, and he believed the forum would be a great success.
Other former political leaders, including Felipe Calderón, former President of Mexico; George Papandreou, former Prime Minister of Greece; Romano Prodi, former prime minister of Italy; Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister of Sweden; Marty Natalegawa, former Foreign Minister of Indonesia; and Terje Rod-Larsen, President of the International Peace Institute, delivered speeches at the forum. They congratulated the organizers on the opening of the forum and shared insights on the forum theme from their different perspectives with other forum participants.
The opening ceremony and the forum were moderated by Xie Yuan, Vice President of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC).
Also attending the opening ceremony were Mr. He Yafei, Vice Minister of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, and Mr. Chen Rugui, Standing Member of the CPC Guangzhou Committee and Executive Vice Mayor of Guangzhou.
Before the opening ceremony, the VIPs planted cassia trees, symbols of friendship and cooperation.
This Forum will conclude on October 18th. During the Forum, participants from around the world will conduct in-depth discussions on specific issues related to the Belt and Road Initiative, covering areas that include regional cooperation and challenges, cross-border financial services, trade and investment, and security. At the same time, they will exchange views on how to enhance economic ties, promote regional development, and develop a security outlook for Asia.
The conference organizer describes the Imperial International Convention Center as an ideal place for high-level forums. In the past four years, a number of events, including the Global Economic Forum, the Global Summit of SME Leaders, and the Going into Latin America Forum, were held here. Bill Clinton, former President of the United States, and John Howard, former Prime Minister of Australia, gave speeches at the Imperial International Convention Center.
